I didn’t need A Scarf and a Half when I visited the Scottish Borders for the Heart of Hawick Children’s Book Awards. The sun was shining and I received a warm welcome.
My scarf book was one of four picture books short-listed for the award. A further four were chosen for junior fiction. We visited schools in the town followed by an awards ceremony in which authors faced a question and answer session from some of the children. It was great to take knitting-loving Granny Mutton to a town famous for its wool!
Thank you to Hawick Book Committee for making my visit memorable and Trinity Primary School pupils for their enthusiastic welcome to Granny’s extra long scarf. The book awards encourage the children to review and actively engage in the books which hopefully will give them a life-long love of reading.
